The Complete Move-In / Move-Out Cleaning Checklist
Moving is stressful enough without worrying about cleaning. Whether you're trying to get your security deposit back or you want to start fresh in a new home, a systematic approach saves time and ensures you don't miss anything.
Kitchen
- Clean inside and behind the refrigerator (pull it out — you'll find things)
- Degrease the stovetop, oven interior, and range hood filter
- Wipe inside all cabinets and drawers
- Clean the dishwasher interior — run an empty cycle with vinegar
- Scrub the sink and polish the faucet
- Wipe down countertops, backsplash, and any open shelving
Bathrooms
- Scrub the tub/shower, including grout lines and glass doors
- Clean the toilet thoroughly — inside the bowl, around the base, and behind it
- Wipe the vanity, mirror, and all fixtures
- Clean inside the medicine cabinet
- Remove any hard water buildup (a common issue in San Antonio and Austin)
Bedrooms and Living Areas
- Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and vents
- Clean inside all closets — shelves, rods, and floors
- Wipe baseboards and door frames
- Clean windows inside and out (if accessible)
- Vacuum or mop all floors, including corners and under any remaining furniture
Throughout the Home
- Clean all light switch plates and door handles
- Wipe down all interior doors
- Check and clean the laundry area (lint buildup behind the dryer is a fire risk)
- Replace HVAC filters
- Clean the garage floor if applicable
The Deposit Question
Texas law requires landlords to return security deposits within 30 days, but deductions for cleaning are common and legal. A move-out clean that covers everything on this list gives you the strongest position. Document the condition with photos after cleaning — timestamp and all.
Short on time? A professional move-in or move-out cleaning covers this entire checklist in a few hours. It's one of our most requested services, especially during Austin and San Antonio's busy moving seasons (May through August).
